Federal Republic of Germany: 16 States
Today, there are 16 federated states (or länder) of Germany. Many of them became states when the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949; however, some were added after the German reunification in 1990. What is now called the Federal Republic of Germany was previously known as the German Empire from 1871 until the end of World War II. Before that, they were sovereign states/kingdoms and a part of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 until 1806. Locations in Germany are tricky as they changed frequently: see the Germany Project's Location Field Guidelines for more information on the many names for the place we now call "Germany" (or "Deutschland").
Table: 16 States

I posted a query a day ago in G2G about the information I would like to add to the profile of Johannes Ludwig Nickel Lauterbach (1652-1736).

My brickwall great grandmother, (see her profile Greener-24), has separately given Germany, Werdau and Lobenstein as her birth place.
There are two Werdau both I think in Saxony.
Lobenstein is now Bad Lobenstein in I believe Thuringia. The Evangelist Lutheran Church in Bad Lobenstein says no one called Gruener was born in Lobenstein about 1858.
There's no result searching for her and her father on FamilySearch German records.
I'd welcome confirmation of which state the two Werdau are in.
I'll join the appropriate team or teams to pursue Caroline Gruener and her father Frederick.
Grateful for any leads or suggestions you may have
Best wishes

you are right, there exist two locations called Werdau: To which German state the two Werdau belonged in the past depends from the time frame. During the German Empire (1871-1945) one Werdau belonged to Kreis Torgau, Regierungsbezirk Merseburg, Provinz Sachsen, Königreich (Freistaat, Land) Preußen (today: Werdau, Stadt Torgau, Landkreis Nordsachsen, Sachsen, Deutschland). The other belonged at that time to Kreis Zwickau, Königreich (Freistaat) Sachsen (today: Werdau, Landkreis Zwickau, Sachsen, Deutschland). For both locations called Werdau there are no church records online avaible. Regards Dieter

In addition to my last comment, I would be happy to hear anything someone could contribute to fill in the life of Stephen Waibel ( my 3rd GGF) who is said to have immigrated to America in 1764 from the Hesse-Darmstadt area when he was 22 years old.
I am interested in sharing with this group the findings of Annette Burgert, a Pennsylvania researcher, who has one of the few references to my own 3rd GGF Stephen Waibel (spelling variations: Wivelle Wiebel, etc.) who immigrated through Philadelphia in 1764 on the ship Brittania. He first settled with the Koenig (King) family in Germany Township and ultimately married a daughter ,Maria Elizabeth. Their story from this point on is unclear and debated by many genealogists. My own fraternal line settled in the Gettysburg area of Adams County PA in 1802 for the next 5 generations while most of the other Wiebels moved on to Western PA. Can anyone clarify this?

slightly different version of the location https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z%C3%BCsedom
I think it is the same place just different time periods...
If you want to be added to a team we can add you to both regions as stated in the two links above.

I suppose you are looking for the village "Züsedom" - a village and a former municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Since 1 January 2012. Please type in: Wikipedia and you are able to search in English as well German. Best regards Matthias WINFRIED Heid-159
